Lifescapes

Tiny little Passerines, black and chestnut in colour, with brown patches, these cute little birds are commonplace in the woods. Their classic Robin pose, a tail pointed to the sky, is a unique characteristic of this 20 cm ‘bundle of energy’. Constantly on the move, hopping around from place to place, these chirpy birds are often found in open tracks, rocky terrain and wooded areas.

The males are black with a brown rump and a small white splotch on the wing, mostly visible in flight, while the females are more on the brownish side. A unique trait of this bird is that it draws in a large breath of air, and actually puffs itself up, enlarging its size – to ward of its potential attackers.

The Robin’s diet comprises mostly little insects, grasshoppers and wasps, but it is known to get at the occasional lizard or even a frog. Its nest is normally found in creaks, between stones, and under thick bushes. It is known to fiercely guard its nest.

These little ones are spotted all over Orange County, Kabini, and are normally the first little birds you get to see, when you step out of the cottages at daybreak.
